Food and Catering Waste

Food and catering waste can be defined as all waste food, which includes used cooking oil that is produced in restaurants, catering facilities and kitchens which prepare food for human consumption. Reducing food waste is a major issue and not just about good food going to waste; wasting food costs the average family with children almost £60 a month and has serious environmental implications too. The amount of food we throw away is a waste of resources. Just think about all the energy, water and packaging used in food production, transportation and storage. This all goes to waste when we throw away perfectly good food. Many councils now collect food waste, which can be recycled in several ways including: In-vessel composting involves mixing food waste with garden waste – shredding it and then composting it in an enclosed system for around 2-4 weeks (temperatures of up to 70°C speed up the process and ensure any harmful microbes are killed off. The material is then left outside to mature for a further 1-3 months with regular turning and checks to ensure quality before going on to be used as soil conditioner.

Chemical Waste Recycling

To avoid the potential risks associated with chemical wastes, it is important that people always monitor the use, storage, and disposal of products with potentially hazardous substances in their homes. Improper disposal of HHW can include pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases putting them out with the regular trash.

The dangers of such disposal methods might not be immediately obvious, but improper disposal of these wastes can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health. Certain types of chemical wastes have the potential to cause physical injury to sanitation workers, contaminate septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems if poured down drains or toilets. They can also present hazards to children and pets if left around the house.

 Vegetable oil recycling:

The vegetable oil before being discarded should be sent for recycling so that it can be recycled as bio diesel or other household purposes. It is always better to recycle your cooking oil and grease then put it into your sink. Cooking oils and grease can cause your sewers to backup which could damage your home or threaten the environment. Vegetable oil refining is a process to transform vegetable oil into fuel by hydrocracking or hydrogenation. Hydrocracking breaks larger molecules into smaller ones using hydrogen while hydrogenation adds hydrogen to molecules. These methods can be used for production of gasoline, diesel, and propane. The diesel fuel that is produced has various names including green diesel or renewable diesel .In the past waste oils were collected by pig farmers as part of food waste from pig swill bins. The grease was skimmed off the swill tanks and sold for further processing, while the remaining swill was processed into pig food.

 Electrical and Electronic waste recycling:

E-waste is electrical and electronic equipment of any kind that has been discarded. Recycling e-waste protects human and environmental health. Improper disposal of e-waste leads to environmental pollution and this may in turn harm human health. The best way to treat e-waste is to recycle it properly. E-waste comprises many different components and requires specialised equipment to dismantle, shred, process and extract the constituent materials that can then be turned into new products. This has to be performed within a controlled system to prevent pollution and ensure workplace safety and health. Recycling e-waste also helps to conserves our earth’s precious natural resources. Recycled material is used to make new products. This reduces the need to mine virgin raw materials from the earth, which are limited in supply. Reducing the need for mining also lowers pollution, as the process of mining has an impact on our environment. Common types of e-waste includes mobile phones, computer and mobile phone batteries, Home appliances, such as TVs, fridges, air conditioners, washing machines, lamps & lighting, electronic toys etc.

Plastic waste recycling.

Plastic is among the most popular and important materials used in the modern world. However, its popularity is part of the huge problem and reason why plastics should be recycled. Instead of throwing them away polluting the land and our water bodies, we can optimize the lifespan of plastics by recycling and reusing them. Plastic recycling refers to the process of recovering waste or scrap plastic and reprocessing it into useful product. Due to the fact that plastic is non-biodegradable, it is essential that it is recycled as part of the global efforts to reducing plastic and other solid waste in the environment. Plastic recycling process includes collection, sorting, shredding, cleaning and melting.

 Paper recycling.

Paper recycling pertains to the processes of reprocessing waste paper for reuse. Waste papers are either obtained from paper mill paper scraps, discarded paper materials, and waste paper material discarded after consumer use. Examples of the commonly known papers recycled are old newspapers and magazines. Other forms like corrugated, wrapping, and packaging papers among other types of paper are usually checked for recycling suitability before the process. The papers are collected from the waste locations then sent to paper recycling facilities. Paper is one the material that can be easily recycled. Recycled paper is paper that was made from paper and paper products that has already been used and recovered. People need to take their time and save the paper products so that they can be recycled. Paper recycling begins with us. We all need to show our interest in recycling to make it successful.

 Rubber recycling

Each year, approximately 100 million tires are processed by the recycling industry. In the past, scrap tires — generated when an old, worn tire is replaced with a new tire — were often dumped illegally in lakes, abandoned lots, along the side of the road and in sensitive habitats. At tire recycling facilities, the main piece of equipment is the tire shredder, which uses powerful, interlocking knives to chop tires into smaller pieces. Shredding a tire at room temperature using such knives is called ambient shredding. Tires can also be shredded through a cryogenic process that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze them at a sub-zero temperature. Such temperatures cause the physical properties of the tires to change dramatically and become very brittle. The tire is placed in an enclosure in which powerful hammers smash the tire apart. Cryogenic grinding is used to make fine crumb rubber powders that are then used in products such as synthetic turf. The non-rubber portions of the tire also are recycled.

Industrial waste recycling

Industrial waste recycling includes chemical waste, e-waste, metal waste, plastic waste, paper recycling, rubber recycling etc.  Many industrial processes have the potential to produce hazardous waste. To help potential hazardous waste generators identify if they produce hazardous waste, it provides examples of hazardous wastes that are typically generated by specific industries and provide suggestions for how to recycle, treat or dispose of the wastes according to federal regulations. The most important benefit of industrial recycling is the fact that you are putting less strain on the Earth’s resources by finding ways to reuse or recycle industrial waste.

Agricultural waste recycling

Agricultural waste recycling is a growing business, as more and more farms and companies turn to alternate ways to process waste products instead of sending them to landfill. With green waste becoming increasingly recycled in homes around the world, agriculture is also turning to recycling methods in order to reduce the amount of waste it has to pay to get rid of. The waste that farms and other rural businesses produce is often extremely varied, and initially not so easy to recycle. The temptation to just bag it up and pay for it to be collected is an understandable one, but that won't save you any money. Strict farm waste laws are in place across the UK and other countries in North America and Europe, and landfill costs have risen dramatically in the last decade.

Photographic waste recycling

Photographic Waste recycling means recycling the chemicals and film in it for various purposes and we should see that no photo chemicals with a pH of less than or equal to 2 or greater than or equal to 12.5 can be disposed of down the drain and Spent Developer (alkaline) and Spent Stop Bath (acidic): may be combined in a single container (with good ventilation) to neutralize the solutions (pH ~7) and make them non-hazardous. Then the combined solution can be disposed of down the sink. The Fixers, toners, reducers or intensifiers cannot be placed untreated down the sink because they contain silver and other heavy metals. These chemicals should be combined into one container and labelled as Hazardous Waste. Dispose of through EH&S using the online Chemical Waste Pickup Request Form.

Printing waste recycling

HOW TO RECYCLE YOUR PRINTER

Used printers and printer cartridges waste have a major impact on landfill space and the environment. More than 350 million used printer cartridges end up in landfills every year. A woeful 70% of printer cartridges aren’t recycled although they can be remanufactured three to four times before they actually wear out. The heavy metals in printers account for much of the lead, cadmium, copper, and chromium found in landfills. It takes 450 to 1,000 years for printer cartridge waste to break down. Recycling a used printer cartridge saves energy, water, and keeps trash out of the landfill. Recycling a printer cartridge saves almost a gallon of oil (the amount of oil needed to manufacture a new printer cartridge), avoids water contamination caused by leeching of heavy metals into the soil, and keeps about two pounds of waste out of the landfill. Discarded printer cartridges add 400,000 tons of waste to landfills every year.

Petrochemical and oil recycling

Petrochemicals are derived from various chemical compounds, mainly from hydrocarbons and these hydrocarbons are derived from crude oil and natural gas. Petroleum gases, naphtha, kerosene and gas oil are the main feed stocks for petrochemical industry. Petrochemical industry plays a vital role in economic growth and development of manufacturing sector. Oil recycling is needed for waste oil or used oil. Oil that has been contaminated with substances that may or may not be hazardous is termed as waste oil. Whereas used oil is defined as any petroleum or synthetic oil that has been used such that a clear change happens in the physical and chemical properties of the oil. Both the used oil and waste oil need to properly recycled or disposed in order to avoid environmental problems.  Generally waste oils are used as hydraulic oil, transmission oil, brake fluids, motor oil, crankcase oil, gear box oil, synthetic oil etc.

Waste recycling management

As the world population produces more and more trash, it is high time to examine the evolution of the waste management and recycling business and the use of robotics in managing this recoverable waste stream. The effective use of such smart technology is regarded as a major step forward in managing and recycling waste. Americans alone are responsible for producing a hopping 220 million tons of waste a year. This number is far more than any other nation in the world .Because of this fact both the government and environmental associations have developed numerous methods of dealing with the problem. Waste management is that solution, a rather complex issue that encompasses more than 20 different industries. Waste management is collection, transportation, and disposal of garbage, sewage and other waste products. Waste management is the process of treating solid wastes and offers variety of solutions for recycling items that don’t belong to trash. It is about how garbage can be used as a valuable resource. Waste management is something that each and every household and business owner in the world needs.

Hazardous waste management

Hazardous-waste management, the collection, treatment, and disposal of waste material that, when improperly handled, can cause substantial harm to human health and safety or to the environment. Hazardous wastes can take the form of solids, liquids, sludge’s, or contained gases, and they are generated primarily by chemical production, manufacturing, and other industrial activities. They may cause damage during inadequate storage, transportation, treatment, or disposal operations. Improper hazardous-waste storage or disposal frequently contaminates surface and groundwater supplies. People living in homes built near old and abandoned waste disposal sites may be in a particularly vulnerable position. In an effort to remedy existing problems and to prevent future harm from hazardous wastes, governments closely regulate the practice of hazardous-waste management. Proper treatment, storage and disposal are required.

Waste to Energy

The most common and popular method for waste to energy generation is Incineration. Incineration is also a very highly debated technology, due to the concerns it raises regarding safety and environmental impact. In simple terms it stands for a type of waste treatment process, where the organics from the waste collected are burnt at high temperatures. Waste treatments that are conducted involving high temperatures are called Thermal treatment. The heat generated from this thermal temperature is then used to create energy. Thermal technologies include Depolymerisation, Gasification and pyrolysis and Non thermal technologies include Fermentation, Mechanical biological treatment and many others.

Summary:

The increasing trend in recycling and waste management has increased. Recycling is a way of life. Once we have made that choice to implement all the steps of recycling in our daily lives, and stick to that choice every single day, recycling becomes second nature to us. Sure there will be lapses; it’s not easy for us creatures of habit. But no matter, we press on. Every small contribution to the recycling movement and the initiative to protect our environment adds up to how our present society eventually shapes our nation’s and the Earth’s future. Waste management or Waste disposal is all the activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. Very one of us has an important role to play in reducing the quantity of waste buried in landfills. Sorting waste in order to recycle or compost it are efficient means to reduce garbage.

But why should we do it?

1.     Because our consuming habits have evolved considerably since the previous generation. We consume more intensely as new products are put on the market and consequently, we produce an ever increasing amount of waste. Two-third of that waste can be either recycled or composted.

2.     Because waste ending up in landfills produces leachate and landfill biogas that are harmful for the water we drink and the air we breathe. Biogas contains mainly methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25% more powerful than carbon dioxide (CO2).

3.     Because the management of our waste is a clean way of living that shows how much we respect the people closest to us. Waste sorting decisions we make today will encourage our children to learn and influence the quality of life of future generations.

Recycling Market Overview

Recycling Management Market is expected to garner $49.4 billion by 2020, registering a CAGR of 23.5% during the forecast period 2014 - 2020. It is one of the fastest growing streams in emerging as well as developed regions. The reduced life spans of electrical, electronic and consumer electronic devices are generating large E-Waste, are getting recycled which is growing rapidly every year. The growth of recycling market is supplemented by the growing need for upgrading to the latest technologies. A desire towards the adoption of new technologically advanced devices leads to generation of millions of tons of E-Waste across various regions and been sent for recycling. According to the United Nations initiative to estimate recycling, the world produced approximately 50 million tons of recycled products in 2012, on an average 15 of lbs. per person across the globe. In 2012, UN also stated that, UK produced, 1.3 million tons of recycled goods. Singapore generated 11.1 million tons of recycled goods, which was followed by United States that accounted for 10 million tons in 2012.

To increase the recycling across the world, initiatives are being taken by the government agencies of various regions. Market players are taking measures to recycle the E-Waste in order to reduce the pollution and environmental hazards caused by it. In June 2014, Dell, a leading computer manufacturer, launched its first computer made of plastics obtained from recycled electronics. The company has started selling its first computer “the OptiPlex 3030” which is made up of old electronics using closed loop recycling process. Recently, Dell has also started using recycled plastics in its other desktops and monitors. Millions of refrigerators, TV sets and cell phones are replaced with newer versions due to user’s growing inclination towards technologically advanced gadgets. In 2010, US discarded about 258 million units of computers, cell phones, TV sets and monitors. North America is a leader in exporting E-waste to the developing countries such as China and Japan.  This exported E-Waste is then recycled in developing regions which generates revenue for the market.

Segment Overview:

  • The amount of materials recycled in Singapore in 2007 was 142.3 million metric tons. This is expected to increase to 158.6 million metric tons in 2008 and 244.8 million metric tons in 2013, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.1%.
  • Recycled metals are the largest segment at 76.8 million metric tons in 2007. This should grow to 83.5 million metric tons in 2008 and 123.2 million metric tons in 2013, a CAGR of 8.1%.
  • The fastest growing segment is recycled tires and reclaimed rubber; 1.9 million metric tons were recycled in 2007, and an estimated 2.2 million metric tons in 2008. This should reach 4.2 million metric tons in 2013, for a CAGR of 14.0%.

The world recycling market is segmented by recycling source and type. Presently, a market trend is observed in North America that highlights the fact that majority of E-Waste is trashed to developing countries, rather than recycling or reusing the same by the producing country.

Developing countries lead in recycling the E-Waste, as majority of E-Waste is exported to emerging countries by developed countries.  Amongst all sources of E-Waste such as IT and telecommunications and consumer electronics, refrigerator sets from household appliances are discarded in highest number as compared to other appliances. The decrease in the life cycle of electronic products viz. computers, laptops, cell phones is generating large amount of electronic waste in North American region.

Recycling Market across the Globe in USD dollars:(Billions)

Singapore appeared to have good waste management techniques. However, recycling showed prominence throughout Singapore in the year 2016-2017. The metal recycling market size is estimated to grow from USD 277.12 Billion in 2017 to reach USD 406.16 Billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 7.95%. The segments considered for this report are based on the metal type; scrap type, end-use sector of recycled metal, and region. The segmentation based on metal type consists of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap for recycling. Scrap type involves old scrap and new scrap taken up for recycling. The end-use sectors for recycled metal are building & construction, automotive, packaging, equipment manufacturing, shipbuilding, and consumer appliances. The final segment, that is, region, consists of North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of the World (RoW). The base year considered for the study is 2014 and the market size is projected from 2015 to 2020. Factors such as increasing urban population, rapid industrialization, growing concerns about the depletion of natural resources, and laws & regulations, have propelled the growth of the global metal recycling industry.

The research methodology used to estimate and forecast the metal recycling market begins with capturing data on key vendor revenues through secondary research. The vendor offerings are also taken into consideration to determine the market segmentation. The bottom-up procedure was employed to arrive at the overall market size of the global metal recycling market from the revenue of the key players in the market. After arriving at the overall market size, the total market was split into several segments and sub segments, which were then verified through primary research by conducting extensive interviews with key people such as CEOs, VPs, directors, and executives. These data triangulation and market breakdown procedures were employed to complete the overall market engineering process and arrive at the exact statistics for all segments and sub segments. The metal recycling market comprises companies such as ArcelorMittal (Luxembourg), Nucor Corporation (U.S.), Commercial Metals Company (U.S.), Sims Metal Management Limited (U.S.), and Aurubis AG (Germany).
